During an airplane crash your body flies forward because of the impact forces. Seatbelts holds only your lower part of the body but torso can freely fly forward so the biggest number of injuries are the ones which are head-related. To reduce risk of those injuries you should keep a brace position during the crash so your head would be protected from extreme forces during an impact. Another thing that is crucial to survive is to have something to cushion the blow. Plane industry is now working on impact absorbents which control the movement of the seat in front of you so that they could take a power of the hit and raise your chances of surviving.
During a crash you should keep a brace position- bend down and protect your head.

  1. That's why car seatbelts go across your body I suppose. Why can't plane seatbelts work like this too?

  2. I guess seatbelt across your body wouldn't let you make a brace position . I'm not sure but I think that maybe there are different types of seatbelts in cars and planes because you have different amount of time to prepare yourself for crash, I mean, in car accident you don't even have time to think about what's happening and in plane you're somehow ready for a crash.
